Large Lab Created Diamonds

While lab diamonds have been around for decades, their popularity has been fueled by the rise of sustainable jewelry. They’re a greener alternative to mined diamonds that are often associated with human rights issues and conflict areas.

How They Are Grown

While naturally occurring diamonds are forged by the crushing pressure and immense heat of the Earth’s mantle, lab created diamonds are crafted inside a machine. These synthetic diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to their natural counterparts.

The first laboratory-grown diamonds were created in 1954 using a method called High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT). This process begins with the “seed” of another diamond, which is encased in a chamber filled with pure graphite carbon and heated to a temperature of around 800C. The diamond seed begins to stick to the carbon, creating a diamond atom by atom.

More recently, a similar method was discovered called Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). In this method, the seed is placed in a chamber filled with ultra-pure carbon-rich gases and heated to around 800C. The diamond grows atom by atom and is then cut into a gem quality diamond.

As well as being eco-friendly, lab created diamonds are also ten times harder than mined diamonds and can be used in the same way in electronics. Unlike mined diamonds, which take billions of years to form deep beneath the earth’s surface, lab created diamonds are formed in days or weeks. This means that they’re much more affordable than their organic counterparts, and are available in all the same shapes and carat sizes as mined diamonds.

They’re also available in a wide range of colors, including white, yellow, blue and pink. Certain types of lab created diamonds are even color-treated to make them whiter or near-colorless.

The Process

Large lab created diamonds are grown using two main methods; the High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). The HPHT process uses a huge hydraulic press to generate 2,000 degF of heat and 1.5 million PSI of pressure. These extreme conditions must be maintained 24/7 for weeks or even months depending on the size of the diamonds being grown.

Another method, the CVD method, involves heating a mixture of hydrogen and methane gases to extremely high temperatures. The hydrogen and methane gases then turn into plasma, which sprinkles tiny carbon pieces on the diamond seed crystal, Salt Bae style, causing it to grow.

Both the HPHT and CVD methods produce jewelry-quality lab grown diamonds that are chemically identical to naturally mined ones. Both processes use the same basic ingredients – a diamond seed and a catalyst containing metals – to replicate the natural process that transforms carbon into diamond.

While there are some differences between the two processes, there is one thing that all lab-grown diamonds have in common – they’re ethical and cruelty-free! The process of mining naturally-mined diamonds is associated with social, environmental and economic problems such as community displacement, low wages, human rights violations and child labor.

In addition, the mining industry often exploits and traffics diamonds that come from conflict regions. This can result in unscrupulous companies smuggling diamonds into the market.

With this in mind, if you want to buy a diamond that you can pass down to your children or grandkids, it’s best to go with a naturally-mined stone. Not only are mined diamonds more eco-friendly than lab-grown ones, but they’re also cheaper.

Ultimately, both lab and naturally-mined diamonds can be certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). But the difference between the two is in their size and price.

The size of the diamond will determine its resale value, but the price of lab-grown diamonds is currently under fire and it is expected that they will eventually be priced at the same or less than mined diamonds. It will be up to the brands that produce these diamonds to build a name for themselves and their stones, which will drive the resale value.
